Getting Started
What is Tachbase?
Tachbase is a complete pilot toolkit. The free tier covers what you need to track your flying and brief a flight: digital logbook with currency tracking, aviation map with live weather overlays, airport info with METARs and TAFs, route building, terrain alerts, and a searchable FAA library. Tachbase Pro unlocks the full EFB for the cockpit — geo-referenced charts, ADS-B traffic, AHRS attitude, in-flight nav (Direct-To, hold, ruler), flight plan filing via FAA Leidos, and full offline downloads.
How do I create an account?
You can create an account on the sign-up page or download the Tachbase app from the App Store and sign up from there. You can sign up with a username and password, or use Apple or Google sign-in.
Is there a free version?
Yes. The free plan covers logging, briefing, and basic planning: digital logbook with currency & certificates, aviation map with live weather overlays (radar, satellite, SIGMETs/AIRMETs/PIREPs, fronts, winds aloft), airport info with METARs / TAFs / NOTAMs / approach plates, terrain alerts, route builder with airways and procedures, FAA Library (FARs/AIM/docs), and basic aircraft entry. Tachbase Pro adds the in-flight EFB layer — geo-referenced charts, ADS-B traffic, AHRS, flight plan filing, offline downloads, hold calc, ruler, weight & balance, and more.
Account & Security
How do I reset my password?
On the sign-in page, click "Forgot password?" and enter your username. If you have an email on file, we'll send a reset link. If you have 2FA enabled, you can also verify your identity with your authenticator app. If you don't have access to either, contact [email protected] for manual identity verification.
How do I enable two-factor authentication?
You can enable 2FA during account creation by checking the "Enable Two-Factor Authentication" option, or later in Settings > Security. Tachbase uses TOTP (time-based one-time passwords) compatible with any authenticator app like Google Authenticator, Authy, or 1Password. You'll receive backup codes in case you lose access to your authenticator.
Can I sign in with Google or Apple?
Yes. Tachbase supports Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google on both the web and iOS app. You can link these to an existing account or create a new account using either provider.
Is my data safe?
Yes. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (AES-256). Passwords are secured with bcrypt hashing. We will never sell, share, or monetize your personal information. You own your data and can export or delete it at any time. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings > Account and select "Delete Account." This permanently deletes all your data including logbook entries, aircraft, flight plans, and certificates. This action cannot be undone. We recommend exporting your logbook first.
Logbook
Can I import flights from ForeFlight or MyFlightbook?
Yes. Tachbase supports CSV import with automatic format detection for ForeFlight and MyFlightbook exports. You can also import from any standard CSV format. The import process includes duplicate detection and allows you to undo the most recent import if needed.
How does currency tracking work?
Tachbase automatically tracks your currency based on your logged flights and FAA regulations. It monitors passenger carrying currency, night currency, instrument currency, flight review, and medical certificate expiry. You'll see visual status indicators showing current, expiring soon, or expired for each requirement.
Can my flight instructor sign entries digitally?
Yes. Your instructor can sign logbook entries directly on your iPad or device using a drawn or typed signature. Signed entries are locked to prevent modification. No QR codes or separate apps needed — the instructor signs right on your screen.
Can I export my logbook?
Yes. You can export your entire logbook to CSV from the Logbook page. The export includes all flight entries, time categories, approaches, and remarks. On iPad/iPhone, the export is shared via the native share sheet so you can send it via email, AirDrop, or save to Files.
Map & Weather
What weather data is available?
All weather is free. Live NEXRAD radar, satellite imagery (infrared and visible), METARs and TAFs, SIGMETs, G-AIRMETs, PIREPs, surface fronts and pressure, TFRs, and animated wind particles at multiple altitudes — all on the map and on the dedicated Weather page with the 7-day outlook. Weather is a safety feature, not an upsell.
What chart overlays are available?
VFR Sectional, IFR Low Enroute, IFR High Enroute, and Terminal Area charts are free, with adjustable opacity on the map. Charts auto-update with each FAA AIRAC cycle (every 28 days). Approach plates and airport diagrams are viewable free; geo-referenced overlay (the plate pinned to your real position on the map, with ownship) is part of Tachbase Pro.
Does the map show airspace boundaries?
Yes. The base map displays Class B, C, D, and E airspace boundaries, Special Use Airspace (SUAs), Military Operations Areas (MOAs), navigation aids (VORs, NDBs), fixes, victor airways, jet routes, and military training routes. Airports are shown with flight category color coding when weather data is available.
Flight Plans
Can I file flight plans with the FAA?
Yes, with Tachbase Pro. Connect your Leidos/1800wxBrief account in Settings > Flight Services, then file VFR and IFR flight plans directly from the app. You can also amend, activate, close, and cancel filed plans with real-time status updates.
How do I connect my Leidos/1800wxBrief account?
Go to Settings > Flight Services and enter your 1800wxBrief credentials. Tachbase connects securely to the Leidos API to file flight plans and request weather briefings on your behalf. You need an existing 1800wxBrief account — you can create one free at 1800wxbrief.com.
Does the nav log account for winds?
Yes. The navigation log (Tachbase Pro) uses real winds aloft forecast data and your aircraft's performance profile to calculate wind correction angles, ground speed, fuel burn, and estimated time en route for each leg of your flight plan.
iPad & Offline
Does Tachbase work offline?
Yes. The native iOS app works fully offline on iPad and iPhone. Download map tiles, airport data, weather, NOTAMs, and charts before your flight, and everything is available without an internet connection. Changes you make offline (logbook entries, flight plans) sync automatically when you're back online.
Does it support ADS-B traffic?
Yes, with Tachbase Pro. The app supports GDL90-compatible ADS-B receivers like the Appareo Stratus, displaying nearby aircraft with altitude, heading, callsign, aircraft type, and trail history. It also receives GPS position and AHRS attitude data from connected devices. Internet-based traffic from ADS-B Exchange is available as well.
What devices are supported?
Tachbase is available as a native iOS app on iPad and iPhone. The web version works in any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) on desktop. The iPad experience is optimized for cockpit use with a full three-form-factor design system (desktop, tablet, phone).
How do I download maps for offline use?
In the native app, go to the Downloads page and select coverage regions to download. Map tiles, airport data, charts, weather, and NOTAMs are bundled for offline use. Downloads support pause/resume and show progress for each region. Tachbase Pro is required for offline downloads.
Tachbase Pro
What does Tachbase Pro include?
Tachbase Pro is the in-flight tier. It unlocks: geo-referenced approach plates & airport diagrams (with ownship), ADS-B traffic + AHRS via Stratus / GDL90, in-flight nav tools (Direct-To, holding-pattern editor, two-finger ruler, leg-to-leg tracking, performance gauges), flight planning & filing with FAA via Leidos (wind-corrected nav log, weight & balance, terrain profile, suggested routes), hazard alerts (audible Traffic and Obstacle callouts), offline downloads (maps, charts, weather imagery, FAA library, pinned charts), Hangar Pro features (curated FAA type DB, W&B envelopes, FAA N-number lookup, maintenance tracking), and advanced logbook (passengers & crew, cost split with email invoices, contacts directory).
